“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
– Romans 8:18 –
Lupita Nyong’o’s heartfelt speech was by far one of the highlights of the 2014 Oscars ceremony. Aside from the ‘best of all selfie’ pics that Ellen posted, it was Lupita’s words that captured the nation. And within the 3 minutes that she graced us with her words, one sentence struck a chord the most…
Describing Patesy, the lady who she played in the movie, 12 years a slave, she said:
“It doesn’t escape for one moment that so much joy in life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s.”
Her words brought tears as the weight of her words echoed long after in our spirits.
How many people have paved the way for us?
Gender rights, race rights, faith.
What price did our ancestors pay for us?
Praying over us. Sacrificing it all for us.
…And then, closer to home – the sacrifice many parents have made in order to give their babies a home, food on the table & their unconditional love…
Hebrews 11 talks about the faith descendants – those who have gone before us and paved the way through the faith they have in Christ. It wasn’t about them – they kept going because they knew that what they were a part of was bigger than that of themselves.
“All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it…”
– Hebrews 11:13 –
They died for a cause that they believed in but never saw come into existence; and perhaps the same in some retrospect may apply to us. Perhaps the the part that we – as individuals – play in this world may not be seen in our lifetime, but by the grace of God may be seen in our children or our children’s children or their children’s children’s life.
The Bible throughout echoes this very thought. It talks about the love that God had for the world that He sent His one & only Son, Jesus Christ; and the love Jesus Christ has for us that He endured insurmountable pain upon the cross for the sins of you and I so that we could receive ‘so much joy’!!
“I came that [you] may have life, and may have it abundantly!”
– John 10:10, English Revised Version –
“Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do super-abundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]…”
– Ephesians 3:20, Amplified –
“So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.”
– Galatians 6:9, The Message –
So beloved, whatever you have sacrificed / do sacrifice, whether it is…
– serving in Church – being the hands and feet of Jesus to those who are new to faith
– serving your babies being the best parent you can be
– serving your parents / other members of your family as a way of gratitude and respect
– preparing to serve by spending copious amounts of hours studying for that degree/course
– serving by coming alongside someone in their ‘hour[s]’ of need…
Just think about how much ‘joy’ God could use you to bring to their lives, and smile!
You’re doing more than you think for more people than you’ll ever know!!
